John Barrell has been playing music since 1980 and has been in various bands over the years, playing with a wide variety of musicians in the states of California and Louisiana. His sound is heavily influenced by KISS, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, the Electric Light Orchestra and other great bands he grew up listening to. From the time he first picked up a guitar he began taking apart the structures of songs he learned and began writing songs of his own and has a large inventory of songs yet to be recorded. Although primarily known for his vocal ability and singing some insanely high notes, he is a master of the rhythm guitar (preferring his signature Flying V's when performing) as well as the 12 string guitar. In the studio he also plays bass, ukulele and some sitar on his projects and fills in the gaps with tons of layered harmony vocals and occasionally even a little percussion.
Although his overall sound is described by some as "music that doesn't suck" or old school rock and roll, he branches out and shows his diversity with acoustic powered songs and ballads as well as island flavored ukulele driven numbers. If something feels right for a song, then nothing is out of bounds! Yet when his music is heard in it's entirety it has a unified vibe and often tells a story to the listener.
