Here are all of the links for more info on the series and their descriptions:
In this first part of the course, we'll create our first Perl program and tackle the basics of regular expressions, those powerful little strings of squiggles and brackets that remain mysterious to so many programmers. Along the way we'll also get a taste of the power of Perl by creating a program that can download text and images from the Internet.
In this part of the tutorial we'll delve into one of the many things that Perl does best -- reading data from files. We'll look at reading comma separated value files (CSV) as an example; we'll look at more regular expression concepts to enable us to clean and check the data we read, and we'll investigate Perl's ability to build complex data structures, allowing us to represent ultimately even the most complicated data in our programs' memory, where we can manipulate it to our hearts' content. We'll also look at web scraping with Perl; the art of collecting data automatically from Internet sites -- where it's legal to do so, of course.
In this third part of the tutorial we're going to tackle the things that we need to build robust, industrial-strength Perl programs; we'll look at program structure, talking to databases, working with XML and making your program user friendly. The syntax you'll learn here will enable you to write programs that are capable of dealing robustly with data imports, exports, transfers and processing, while enabling you to write and run your scripts in a manner that doesn't leave you wishing you'd written an instruction manual.
In the final part of this tutorial series you'll discover some tips, tricks and concepts that will take your Perl programming to the next level. We'll look at an example of the famous Perl one-liners to replace text in files, you'll discover how to create modules in Perl, dividing your programs into logical, reusable units, we'll look at basic "object-oriented" (OO) programming in Perl, some basic sysadmin-type tasks, and we'll even create a simple dynamic website using Perl and the common gateway interface (CGI).
