It has now become clear that the exploration of the Universe, as conducted by hysicists, astronomers and cosmologists, is one of the greatest intellectual adventures of the mid-twentieth century. It is no exaggeration to say that their achievements, especially in the last few years, constitute a revolution in our knowledge and understanding of the Universe without parallel in the whole recorded history of mankind. In this book I have attempted to tell the story of this revolution in a manner intelligible to readers with only a modest knowledge of mathematics and physics. In selecting the topics to emphasise I have been guided by one consideration alone, that the ultimate aim of this work is to eluci- date the structure and history of the Universe as a whole. This is by no means the main aim of all the scientists concerned and in presenting my synthesis of their work I freely admit that I am expressing my own cosmological yearnings. However, I do believe that in retrospect the greatest achievement of our age in astronomy will be seen to be the new insight gained into the workings of our Universe on the largest possible scale.
